Who We Are

Decatur Underground Theater (DUT) was established in 2010 with a vision to bring high-quality musical theater to the Decatur, Illinois, community. Recognizing the abundance of local vocal talent that had largely gone untapped in our community, DUT was founded to provide an opportunity for performers to showcase their abilities while fostering a culture of artistic excellence.

In addition to celebrating local talent, DUT is committed to delivering exceptional musical theater productions at an accessible price, ensuring the entire community can experience the magic of live musical performance. Giving back to the community remains at the heart of the organization’s mission.

DUT debuted with Jesus Christ Superstar at the historic Lincoln Square Theater in 2011, marking the beginning of something truly special. It has since become a creative outlet for many individuals passionate about music and singing, many of whom may have had little to no prior experience in theater. Since its inception, DUT has welcomed approximately 500 participants, spanning all ages—from children and teens to adults and seniors—all who have become part of the DUT family.

To date, DUT has staged more than 18 Broadway-quality musical productions (some more than once), with many more to come.

At DUT, we believe that everyone who joins us becomes part of our family. Our core values—kindness, respect for all perspectives, and integrity in conduct—guide everything we do, creating an environment where creativity, collaboration, and passion for the arts can thrive.

Whether as a performer on stage, part of the backstage or technical crew, helping with set design & build, wardrobe, makeup/hair, social media content creation and management, or any other part of the crew, we invite to join us an become part of the DUT Family!

Decatur Underground Theater is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. All donations to DUT are tax-deductible.
